I caught part of an interview Bill Clinton gave for his old press secretary George Stephanopolous Sunday night. It was such a radical change from Bush Junior's demeanor that I was taken aback at how much I miss having an eloquent andintelligent president.
Clinton spoke candidly (moreso that you'd expect from a political figure on national TV) about tax cuts, Iraq, and Katrina. He seemed calm, collected and gave good insight about how he viewed the current administration's handling of things. Of course he was less than enthusiastic, but I didn't get the feeling it was driven by partisan politics. Instead he explained his logic in a rational manner, something Bush has never done.
I came away wishing we had a president who bothered to explain his plans for the people who voted him into office, rather than smugly announce he has a plan that will fix any problem as long as we have faith in his administration. This presidency (and congress for that matter) has been long on preaching faith but short on productivity. I'm hoping the next bunch will replace demagoguery with some pragmatism. There's only so much reality you can ask society to believe without them seeing it happen for themselves.
